It didn't require a great leap of the imagination since so much of the Buddhist tradition, in works like The Awakening of Faith and the Diamond Sutra, focuses on the nature of the mind. In the 1950s and 60s the influential Zen monk, D.T.Suzuki, wrote several books on Zen Buddhism using the language of psychology. The paths of Buddha and Freud crossed years ago.
